In the last decade the first person view phenomenon has taken the world by storm. It has brought an entirely new field to the hobby with new thrills and challenges. Despite this, FPV remains a hobby that requires a steep learning curve, significant research, a decent investment and a lot of trial and error. This book is a beginner's guide to FPV piloting. It intends to bring the reader from zero knowledge of the subject to a position where they can safely conduct FPV flights. It covers the broad range of necessary topics such as vehicle selection, control link, video link, component placement, ground station design, interference troubleshooting, and tips for successful flights. It provides photographs of commonly used equipment and schematics of typical setups - including a detailed case study on the author's own configurations. The must-have guide for any hobbyist new to the exciting world of FPV.

This is truly a beginners book. As such is is invaluable to a complete newbie but if you have any experience with RC vehicles better than a toy you may not get much out of this. If you've spent any significant time browsing RC forums you won't get much at all from it.
I bought it because while I've had experience with "toy" RC planes and quads I want to get into FPV racing quads - a whole different ballgame to toys. I personally did not get much new info from this book although I'd be lying if I said I didn't learn ANYTHING.
I felt this could have been a sticky post (a very long post) on a forum with the title "Newbs start here"
At any rate, kudos to the author for writing it. It is great for it's target audience. Just remember it's target audience is a basic beginner. You won't know how to build anything or how to fly anything after reading it. You will have a basic understanding of the functions all the electronics perform after reading it though.

The beginner guide to FPV BW Alex Protogerellis 9781329824072 Books Reviews

Few of it's kind , this book simplifies the basic F.P.V. setup . They should make a new version that goes a little more in depth. This NOT a hobby you jump into and to have most/all the information you need in ONE book would be fantastic.
Excellent information in an easy to follow format. There were a lot of caveats about the rapidly changing tech landscape making even this new book require continual updating. However, For the absolute novice like myself, I found the information I needed to take the next step.
Ok book old data
This book got me started into understanding what's up with FPV. After this book and internet research - and I placed my order to get started in FPV!
I found a wealth of information here. I suspect there is enough to save me a lot of money.

Why not include an index?

I've been doing FPV quadcopters and fixed wing for over 3 years and have quite a bit of experience.
I purchased this book to see another view point of this hobby as well as if the content could be centralized and convenient to access. Information about FPV is all over the Internet and sometimes hard to comprehend, esp. for beginners.

In addition, I wanted to see if there were more insights and depth to FPV beyond what I know.
Unfortunately I have to say that this book doesn't deliver the experience well overall. The book is okay to a certain point for beginners, mainly from a text perspective. A lot of pictures and diagrams are pretty poor and leave a lot to be desired.

There should be more images/diagrams to support the text as it needs to provide visualization for the beginner. Some of the diagrams should be simplified as well.

The biggest issue right off the bat I noticed is the lack of information for quadcopters/multirotors. This book is mainly geared towards fixed-wing, despite the rise in popularity of multirotors. The FPV experience in a quadcopter is far different than fix-wing.

Another issue I noticed is there is no errata or change log of the difference between the two editions of the book. I thought the 2 books from the same author would be vastly different, but they are not.
Finally the writing style and format, including the images/diagrams could be improved - it doesn't provide that engaging feel.

This book is informative, but do not expect it to provide functional knowledge to do this hobby successfully.
I read this cover-to-cover in one sitting, but find myself continually referring back to it. Since there isn't a lot in the book world on the rapidly growing hobby of FPV radio control flying, I like others have had to learn through absorbing and sifting through many diverse online forums. But here is a reasonably comprehensive single source of information designed to introduce the traditional LOS pilot to the world of FPV. It hits the mark in making that introduction. Particularly effective is the author's sharing of experiences through several system/platforms over two years which distill the salient lessons learned that will save a beginner lots of time by avoiding common pitfalls.
